On Character

"What you are shouts at me so loudly that I can't hear a word that you say"- Ralph Waldo Emerson via Brian Tracey in Something for Nothing.

I've ran across so many people in business that say the right things and look the part but how they conduct their business and personal lives tells me to run the other way.  Therefore I am forced to continually re-calibrate my BS detector when talking to people who want to network with me.

This Emerson quote reminded me of the last interaction I had with one such person.  It may not be the best thing to admit but I literally couldn't process what he was saying because all I could think about was how I could exit the situation.

For me character builds trust and trust is the basis of all relationships.  It's a pretty simple equation.  I believe that the values, beliefs and motives one exhibits in their business life are inseparable to their personal life and vice versa.  That is why I only seek out those who understand this concept to build mutually beneficial relationships with.
